12-Lead ECG
A 12-Lead Electrocardiogram (ECG) is a key part of your cardiac assessment, designed to evaluate the electrical activity of your heart while at rest. This comprehensive cardiac test uses electrodes placed on your chest, arms, and legs to capture your heart's electrical signals from twelve different angles. The electrical patterns are translated into distinctive waveforms on a monitor or paper printout, giving our medical team a complete view of your heart's function.
During your appointment, you'll lie comfortably while the quick, painless procedure records how your heart conducts electricity, measuring the timing and strength of electrical impulses as they travel through your heart. This quick, non-invasive test is instrumental in identifying arrhythmias or abnormalities in electrical conduction, ensuring potential risks are detected early and addressed effectively.
Cardiac Stress Test
We include cardiac stress testing in your assessment to understand how your heart performs under stress. A cardiac stress test combines a graded treadmill exercise test (GXT) with a stress echocardiogram to screen for coronary artery disease and evaluate your overall heart function.
During the test, you'll walk on a treadmill with gradually increasing speed and incline, designed to safely elevate your heart rate to a predetermined target based on your age and health status. Throughout this controlled exercise, we continuously monitor your heart's electrical activity through ECG leads, tracking how your heart responds to the increasing workload. We'll also measure your blood pressure at regular intervals and carefully observe any symptoms you might experience.
Immediately after reaching your target heart rate, you'll quickly move to an examination table where we perform a stress echocardiogram to assess any structural or functional changes in your heart that occur with exertion. This dual approach provides a comprehensive understanding of your heart's capacity and resilience, allowing us to detect potential blockages or areas of reduced blood flow that might not be apparent when your heart is at rest.
Holter Monitor Test
A Holter monitor is a continuous electrocardiogram (ECG) that records the electrical activity of the heart, typically over a period of 48 or 72 hours. This portable cardiac testing device provides extended monitoring that a standard ECG cannot, capturing your heart's rhythm as you go about your regular daily activities and sleep.
The Holter monitor is particularly useful for detecting irregular heartbeats or arrhythmias that may occur sporadically throughout the day or night, such as atrial fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia. The extended recording period helps us identify patterns or brief episodes that might be missed during a short in-office ECG.
During your appointment, our cardiac technician will place several small adhesive electrodes on specific areas of your chest, connecting them to a small, battery-powered recording device that you'll wear in a pouch or clip to your clothing. The monitor is compact and designed to be comfortable, allowing you to continue your daily routine with minimal disruption. The data collected provides valuable insights into how your heart functions in various real-world situations, giving us a more complete picture of your cardiac health.
